Mercedes Lackey graduated from Purdue University in 1972, after which she worked as an artist's model then a computer programmer. Lackey began writing out of boredom, which quickly turned into necessity. She considers her job to be primarily that of a story-teller.
She has written over 100 novels in a career spanning over two decades. Lackey has collaborated on many fantasy series with authors such as Roberta Gellis and Rosemary Edghill. She has also written many short story and novella collections. Her novels and stories that focus on the Valdemar universe are some of her most beloved. Lackey also writes lyrics and recorded music for Firebird Arts and Music, a small recording company that specializes in science fiction folk music. She has done about 50 songs for them.
